Watched The Report tonight and all I could think is that this administration would, without a second thought, reinstate these barbarous techniques, assuming they haven’t already. And it is a reminder that much that was evil was implemented under prior Republican administrations. Trump’s policies and positions (except for his adoration of Putin) are not out of line with his GOP predecessors.

That’s easily one of the most cringeworthy things to come out of the Star Wars franchise. The only thing that it’s memorable for was the introduction of Boba Fett.
I saw episode 8 of The Mandalorian: I have to say, it’s been a very well-done series thus far and Season 1 certainly ended on a high note. Taika Waititi’s direction and a solid script by Jon Favreau for the season finale earns up a thumbs-up.

We see how he’s handled impeachment. A direct repudiation of him by the American people would be greater and I think that’s why he likes the dictators. Putin doesn’t have to worry about the Russian people’s responding to his actions the way democratically elected leaders do.

So I didn’t post this but on Thursday I had my bi weekly dungeons and dragons night. One guy is a Trumper. I said happy IMPEACHMENT brother, in a joking fashion, and then said happy holidays my friend.
He then did the republican talking point stating that trump gets two more terms if he is impeached and exonerated.
I said no. He doesn’t.
My friend says he does and it is in the Constitution.
I said where in the Constitution and that Bill Clinton is calling and wants to have a word with him to discuss the amendments and how the Constitution works.
My friend shut up at that one.

2. The song is usually called “Kaneis Edo Den Tragouda”, “To Mpaglamadaki” or in this case “Ragizi-i-kardia-apopse”. All are lines from the lyrics.

I noticed that dumbfuck never mentions anything about the homeless in Texas. Underneath Highway 59 in Houston, four blocks up the street from Minute Maid Park where the Astros play, there are literal homeless communities for countless blocks. Hundreds, if not thousands of tents where Houston’s homeless sleep and congregate. Many of them are real veterans too, and none of them got out of service because of bone spurs, or ever considered their sex lives to be their personal Vietnam.

Our Southern town of about 50,000 has hundreds of homeless sleeping rough—some in tents, some of them families. It’s very possible that we have a higher ratio than the large cities. They’re here because we have at least rudimentary social services—and it’s warm.

Never ceases to amaze me what goes for smart nowadays. Common right wing talking point: City has huge problems, run by Democrats, therefore, problems caused by Democrats.
The fault in that thinking is that there’s more than one possible outcome, excluding these potential outcomes:
GOP could make it better
GOP could make it worse
GOP could be the same
It also completely discounts the voters who choose the leadership. You’re basically insulting them and calling them stupid for choosing government administrators that make things worse.

Many Republicans actually don’t understand rates of occurrence. I wish I had a dollar for each time I’ve heard some ignoramus say that flying is safer than driving only because a lot more people drive. I explain passenger miles per fatality and they say something like, “Oh, kinda’ like per capital (sic) stuff.” Yes, you inbred moron, kind of like per capita stuff.
Another one that pisses me off is ignorance of compass directions. For some reason, this is especially common in Lubbock and west Texas. “Okay, the loading door is on the east side of the building.”
“Duh, which one is that?”

There’s a town I keep an eye on: Redding, California, because it’s becoming dominated by one church, Bethel. (Yes, the same Bethel that pushed the resurrection of a child a couple weeks back.) The last mayor of Redding (an appointed position among the city council) was an elder of Bethel and she proposed locking up the homeless in November:
This California City Wants to Build a Homeless Shelter That’s Basically a Jail
“You need to get clean, you need to get sober, you need to demonstrate self-sufficiency. And once you do that, you’re free to go,” said Redding Mayor Julie Winter.
Of course, Julie Winter, the rest of the Council and the Redding Chamber of Commerce won’t look at what’s causing housing prices to skyrocket, which forces people out on the street, and it’s the presence of Bethel, its unaccredited “Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry”, and frequent weekly and weekend conferences. No, oh no, can’t possibly tell the largest church in town that they’re making things worse for the homeless. Blergh.

Turning some of our soldiers into jailers of their fellow citizens would be severely bad for morale.
I’m old enough to remember when there were few homeless.
Then Reagan came in and his whiz kid Stockman conspired with Congressional Republicans and Blue Dogs led by Phil Gramm to gut Section 8 Housing Assistance. All of a sudden a lot of folks dependent on Section 8 were evicted and wound up on the streets.
Oh and I also remember when Carter passed Social Security Amendments requiring Disability recipients to be re-examined because ABC did a series of news reports alleging a high rate of fraud in the program, especially SSI. At that time I was working for the Pennsylvania Labor Department as a disability examiner. All of a sudden we were ordered to purge 40% of the rolls. Reagan’s stooge Schweicker then running HHS set that figure in stone. Examiners got to the point that they just denied continuation cases on the slightest reason. We barely got to the 40% quota.
End result—more homeless and lots of people committed suicide when the benefits were cut off. And what did the Corporate Controlled Conservative Press do?
The motherfathers were completely silent about that. But they endlessly kissed President Pruneface’s ass until Iran-Contra…
I always believed that Reagan got karmic retribution with Alzheimer’s for his cruelty.
re: #73 jaunte
Turning some of our soldiers into jailers of their fellow citizens would be severely bad for morale.
It sort of went the other way—the commanders didn’t want their troops corrupted and victimized by the poors. The expressed purpose was humanitarian. Like some of the most outrageous social engineering fuckups, it required the confluence of conservative and liberal thinking.

Criminalizing being homeless is not a good policy.
Well, the saga of racism in the Romance Writers of America continues, and basically the RWA is burning to ashes, in between a good chunk of the board leaving, a good chunk of the writers leaving, and people generally just fed up.
I didn’t know this, but back in April, the Guardian did a long read on the issue of race in the romance book world and it’s worth a read.
Now, for some amusement. Chuck Tingle is sui generis and writes erotic dinosaur, monster, etc. fiction. A few years ago, during a period when the Science Fiction Writers of America had a similar up in flames moment, Tingle work “Space Raptor Butt Invasion” was shortlisted for a Hugo Award for Best Short Story via campaigning by the “Rabid Puppies,” a group of truly obnoxious people decrying the “politicization of science fiction.” Tingle said that if he was voted the award, he’d have Gamergate harassment victim Zoe Quinn stop by to pick it up. Of course, he didn’t win but he showed where he was at, and in any case the SFWA ejected one of the noisiest racists and things calmed down considerably, and hence the background for this tweet.
(Damon Suede is a pseudonym for the president-elect of RWA.)

I have to wonder, now that Chuck Tingle has entered the fray, if he’ll write about it on his blog. I do know that the current SFWA president, Mary Robinette Kowal, has invited RWA writers to take a look at SFWA if their books check off horror, fantasy or science fiction elements (and a lot of them DO).

The Screw York Times lies. Endlessly.
Judith Miller was regurgitating what the Bush Administration passed on to her. Kenneth Vogel was starting to do the same with Biden, before the whistleblower put a stop to it. The NY Times has functioned too frequently like Chuck Todd who proclaimed years ago that it wasn’t his job to inform on facts, but just allow partisans on his show to spew a message without a pushback from him on their dishonesty. The NY Times didn’t create the lies which arose before they published anything — they just passed them on uncritically.
It’s not only the NY Times — the MSM throughout the country reports on what other sources (particularly government sources) have passed on to them.40 years earlier, the media supported the Johnson administration which lied us into the Vietnam conflict, which led to the deaths of over 50,000 Americans. Your son and so many other sons and daughters have died because governments lie about what is actually happening and instead create a narrative to serve their political purposes, while newspapers and other media fail to do their due diligence.

What is also so fucking stupid about this is that if one has to be homeless doesn’t it make sense to be in a warm climate? Makes it just a little easier to survive. A portion of the homeless population in California is from other states.
Also, what does trump propose to do and how is he going to pay for it?
My idea for how to deal with the homeless, and how to pay for it (which the right wing will never agree to, because it’s so commie…)
Have y’all seen Grapes of Wrath? Remember the tent city encampment the Joads ended up at? Each family has a tent on a wooden platform, with some cots, maybe 300 square feet. There’s a community kitchen tent that looks a lot like a Jose Andres project, and an administrative office where people can get mail. An elementary school. Each of the adults has to put in a certain number of hours helping take care of the place, there’s minimal paid staff running it, people eventually (a few at a time) get real jobs with real incomes and their family moves on…
The only real expense is having the land to put it on.

re: #89 Hecuba’s daughter
I’ll pitch in that the Washington Post has been doing a pretty good job at reporting things accurately. If they mention a RW talking point, they very often follow it with why it’s wrong. Their coverage of Trump’s lies is regularly brutal. I subscribe and have very few qualms about it.
That said, they give some of the worst columnists on the planet way too much space.

Yeah and J0el 0$teen got away with stealing $600K from his church safe!
3/11/2014:
Authorities are investigating after $600,000 in checks and cash was stolen from a safe at Pastor Joel Osteen’s Houston megachurch, which has one of the largest congregations in the country.
Police spokesman Kese Smith said Tuesday $200,000 in cash and $400,000 in checks were stolen from a safe sometime between 2:30 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m. Monday.
The theft was reported Monday morning by a church employee and an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who provides security at the facility.
Hmmm, wonder why the case was never solved…and if the cash is still in 0$teen’$ $wi$$ Bank A¢¢ount?

Do you know how to make Beef Wellington?
I know if anybody ever demanded that I serve such a meal… I’d go to Zabar’s for a box full of stuff I just have to reheat.

I’m a foodie and I love to cook. A friend just made it and I had been teasing myself for a while. Now the Wife Unit has committed me to the task.
I like Gordon Ramsay’s recipe above. The other way to make is is there’s actually multiple layers: pate, think pancake, duxelle, pastry. I like the proscuitto/duxelle/pastry as it’s easier so that’s what I’m going with. Plus my foodie buddy shared his mistakes so I got that going for me.
But why is it a street crime to sell $99 tickets to heaven?

Pulpit Pimps sure would like to know why that $99 isn’t in their collection plates!
I just connected a little digital-to-analog preamp/headphone amp to my computer. Why did I wait so long to buy one? It sounds SO much better than the computer sound card.

I get one a year. Nice to know you’re getting your 2020 snare early!
Hey lizardom. Posting has been light for me since I adopted my 7 year old German Shepherd guy. I have been dogless for 6 years. Never really got over losing my last guy. But I saw this dude at the shelter and over a period of 2 weeks visiting him on and off to play/interact with him, I had to spring him. Huge lifestyle changes but I’m welcoming it. Even found a great trainer less than a mile away. My wallet is a lot less lighter but $ spent on him instead of weekend boozing is a welcomed change.
He’s only been home 1.5 months, and has settled in quite well. He does have some pretty significant issues but they are manageable. After this guy’s sad story, I can understand a bit.
His owner who got him as a puppy in 2012 died suddenly in September of a heart attack. The extended family neglected him for a month before dumping him at the shelter, scared and muzzled. It was bad. To the point where the shelter folks were afraid of him too. A month there and he lost more than 20 lbs. I had to spring the guy even though I wasn’t 100% prepared. Someone else was showing interest in him while my friend and I were with him in the play area. A guy with 6 and 9 year old kids. That could have been a death sentence for this guy. So I claimed him and picked him up from the vet a few days later after his neutering.
I’m determined to help this guy live his golden years the way he deserves. A few bumps here and there, but we are definitely figuring each other out. :)
Here’s Bear.

Oh, poor Cleo.
There’s this behaviorist on YouTube. Tom Davis.
He’s amazing. I’ve learned just through watching him that all these issues come down to communication. Simply shoving treats into a dog’s mouth will never solve anything. Hang in there!
And I agree. The more dogs the better. But then reality sets in. lol

I’m pretty sure the Star Wars Holiday Special was written and directed by a sentient bag of cocaine.
Some excerpts from a 2012 NPR report on Hitler based on a book by A.N. Wilson — who does that remind you of?
Too long so behind the click:
On describing Hitler as a lazy man
“If you read about Mussolini or Stalin or some of these other great monsters of history, they were at it all the time, that they were getting up in the morning very early. They were physically very active. They didn’t eat lunch. They didn’t waste their time, and you would assume that Hitler was the same type of person.
“He wasn’t. … He stayed up all hours during the night talking and playing music and watching films. He got up very, very late. It was unusual for him to have stirred before 12 o’clock midday. He lazed about and he’d actually, most of his days, even when he was the chancellor of Germany, he did very, very little.
“Even some of the great ideas which we think are essentially Nazi, like wishing to eliminate children who were born with defects of one kind or another, he didn’t dream that up. The doctors came to him and suggested this and he said, ‘OK, why not go ahead with it?’ “
On German perceptions of Hitler during the 1930s
“I think one of the very frightening things about the regime of the National Socialists is that it made people happy. I remember an old person to whom I was speaking 20 or 30 years ago, who had visited the Soviet Union many times in the days of Stalin, told me that when you went to Stalin’s Russia, you never saw a happy face. People were oppressed. People were frightened. And there was an air of absolute misery. But when you crossed over into Germany between the period of 1933 and, let’s say, ‘38, people were happy. They believed in this monster.
“They believed in him because he brought full employment. He was building marvelous roads. He was promising every German family a motorcar. And they didn’t think there was going to be war. And they turned a blind eye to the horrible things he was doing to the Jews, of course.”
Think of all those who prattle about their 401(k) balance and use it to justify their support of Trump.

The dark circle near the top of the atmospherically-reddened Sun is the Moon — but so is the dark peak just below it. This is because along the way, the Earth’s atmosphere had an inversion layer of unusually warm air which acted like a gigantic lens and created a second image. For a normal sunrise or sunset, this rare phenomenon of atmospheric optics is known as the Etrucan vase effect.

Mainstream media being manipulated by bad faith actors =/= should not listen to news organizations but rely on the epistemological closed right wing media.
It was appalling when the Times hired Bret Stephens in the first place, because he’s a dyed in the wool climate change denier. Since then the mask has really come off, and now he’s pushing eugenics and white supremacism.

I’d say “It’s the one that *faces* east ” and then see what happens

Twitter has been suspending many accounts that are bots or trolls — fake accounts that don’t represent real people.
